TREAD Process

TREAD is the product of three weeks designing and traveling in Italy, and one week of prototyping at RISD.  

The average human lives to be 67.2 years old.  The average rate of sea level rise this year was 3 mm. The average human will see 201.6 mm of ocean rise in their life.  These overshoes, with their 201.6 mm soles, will keep the wearer's feet dry for their entire life.  

The human lifespan and the rate of sea level rise will increase every year.  TREAD is a fictional shoe brand that releases a pair of these overshoes every season. The new pairs factor in the most recent statistics.  Each season's shoes will be slightly taller than the last, and therefore render the older shoes obsolete.
